New Eyeglasses that enables color blinded see the world

Ever wondered about, what's the reason behind the iconic blue color of Facebook? It’s because of The CEO, Mark Zuckerburg has red-green color blindness. It also has to be noticed that one in 12 men and one in 200 women suffer from any of the color blindness.

The most common issue of color blindness is failing to distinguish between red and green colors. Don McPherson of EnChroma accidentally found that- by making the glasses to absorb different wavelengths, people with color blinds can see the world as it is. They got this project granted from National Institute of Health and after many trails, this was started in 2010.

When a normal person looks at a rainbow, he can see the whole swath of visible colors- from violet to red. However, we cannot pick the lights from all wavelengths and differentiate them. Our eyes won’t work as such unique detectors to distinguish the colors.

So, our retina makes three types of color sensitive cells, generally called as cone cells. Each cone cell is sensitive to a wide range of colored light. This information the retina receives will be sent to the brain, where it combines the information from all the three types of cone cells. Each cone in the retina is sensitive to light from different parts of the spectrum. They may be referred to red, green, and blue cones, which are just wavelengths of light ranging from long, medium, and short.

What makes people colourblind?

When the cones of the eyes become sensitive to a slightly different range of wavelengths, response to the photopigments may mess up. This causes a lot of perceptual differences. This color blindness can also be inherited when the red-green perceptual defects are seen. The problem is their brain cannot compare and respond to the various wavelengths of light. So, a particular color, mostly red or green, will be disappeared from their vision. This is more of a lacking comparative information.

How to Cure this?
It is about catching up the wavelength and intensity of the light, that is missing from our retina. A glasses that can provide these additional wavelengths by capturing from the surroundings helps these color blind to see the world. A lens was created by EnChroma and this was funded by Zenni opticals, which can correct the color blindness.
The eyeglasses 2.0 from Zenni optical will be of best use to people suffering from color blindness, given that these glasses in Oxy-Iso version reduces the red-green deficiency. Though EnChroma glasses use a coating that enables the same, at what cost? It’ll make you spend more than $500 for this purpose.
When the color blindness becomes intense, it causes macular degeneration and results in intense blindness. Thus, these glasses from Zenni Optical will help in outlining the wearer and makes the lenses to read the objects.

How to Check it:

A simple Ishihara Colour plate test can be used to check whether you’re suffering from the color blindness or not.

From the above picture, if you’re able to see the number “73”, then it’s fine. But, any other number like 78 or 4, you should consult a doctor.
