Review of an Australian Band- GANGgajang
To
describe the band GANGgajang in three simple words, it’ll be FUN, FUN, FUN.
Started with three members, it has evolved as one of the best Pub Music Bands
in Australia. These songs are so addictive that you can’t stop yourself from
not getting onto the floor.
GANGgajang
was formed in 1984 when Chris Bailey (of The Angels), Mark Callaghan (of The Reptides), and Buzz Bidstrup (of The Angels)
were commissioned together for writing songs for the program “Sweet & Sour”
on ABC TV. Those songs became their debut album, “GANGgajang”, titled by their
band name. It was a huge success with
more than 130,000 sales with hit singles House
of Cards, Gimme Some Lovin, Giver of Life. It also has a classic song, Sounds of Then (This is Australia). In the team, Mark Callaghan-
the front man with lead vocals and guitar, Chris Bailey on Bass Guitar, Buzz on
the Drums. In the later years, two of the artists were added- Robert James on
lead guitar and Geoffrey Stapleton on Keyboards, Guitar, and artwork. Thus, this Pop Rock Band, GANGgajang became a
live entity.
In
1987, when the tracks from the album were featured in movie Mad Wax, this band was introduced to the
worldwide audience and featured in “World’s
Best Band” with the release of their second album- GANGagain. GANGgajang was considered as the World’s best band for
two years in a row.
On the Album “GANGgajang”:
From
the unofficial Anthem of Australia- “Sounds of Then” to the energetic beat
“House of Cards”, this album takes the best of reggae influenced music and
mixes it with the surf rock essence of Aussies to showcase the best party music feel in the Land of Oz. This band
makes the best live performances that you can ever experience with the pleasure
to see effortlessly making the audience involved- right from the second they
enter the stage. “Sounds of then” turned
out to be the best patriotic songs for Australia.
On the Album “GANGagain”:
This album has been ranked as high as 51st
position during its release in Australian Music charts. It was released in 197
in form of LP and CD with the help of production company, True Tone Records. It
has some of the best music like- Tree of Love, Luck of the Irish and Live and Learn. Some songs in this album were solely by James- Baby has Eyes for You and by Stapleton- In Spite of
Love.
Consequently, their third and fourth albums- Lingo and Oceans and Deserts were released in 1994 and 2002 respectively.
Lingo hosted some best music like Talk to Me, Future Days. Lingo was ranked at
66th rank at the peak and this showed their dipping in the chart
lists. When Oceans and Deserts released,
it wasn’t even featured in the charts for its poor performance. It consisted of
songs like Anodyne Dream and Pill for the Pain noticeably. James solely sang
three songs on this album, namely-
Nomadsland, Camp of the Moon, and Waiting in the Wind.
